Current Projects

Luis is an 11 year-old male with Progressive Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. He requires a wheelchair and full-service assistance for dining and transportation. He is currently living with his mother, a single parent that is providing for her family of six. His father has been absent for three years leaving Luis’ mother and his 17 year-old sister to care for the family.

Given the extreme poverty in which they live the family appears to be very resilient. In fact, Luis seems makes great efforts to excel and has an amazing "will to live."

Luis receives a small pension and limited medical coverage. He and his family live in a one-room house built of blocks, a tin roof, and a dirt floor. An open pit serves as their restroom facility. They have electricity, drinking water, and bottled gas but they use firewood and charcoal for cooking to save electricity. Their financial resources do not cover the family’s basic needs and leaves them in extremely challenging living conditions.

Current Needs:

Financial support for the purchase of plumbing materials to build the accessible restroom. As well as support to purchase a hand shower, an electric water heater and cleaning equipment.

Current Projects

Santiago suffered an accident in 2007 that left him wheelchair-bound. He is currently living alone in his home built from blocks and cement. The construction of an accessible restroom facility was underway but it was left incomplete due to financial constraints. Santiago deals with many significant architectural access barriers, especially while traveling in and out of his neighborhood. The situation severely limits his social activity and often times leaves him isolated. Furthermore, he has limited medical coverage and he receives little government assistance for his condition. Due to his current state, he is unable to work and is forced to live off of his small disability pension and limited resources from his family.

Current Needs:

Financial support to purchase materials to complete a handicap accessible restroom, a water tank, an electric water heater, a shower, sink, and plumbing.
